She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
she hides the bruises with the linen and lace oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights

This song as always meant a lot to me... I can often relate it to my life. Not what the little girl is going through... just how she feels. Alone... abandoned... broken. You don't have to be abused to feel like that. This song isn't just for people who have been abused. It's for anyone who has been left behind.
