A death on DA

Tue May 26, 2009, 4:40 AM

  • Listening to: Dead in Ditches- Hollywood Undead
This death is not of a person, just to clarify that RIGHT NOW. What is dying is something much larger then a person, something much older then a person. Something a person will slave over for hours and hours... and get two favs and a comment on. Now a few still keep it alive, but barely.

The death I'm talking about is of Traditional Art.

I rarely see it anymore. Sure there's Pearl, Goldenwolf and others... but they're all wolf artists. I rarely see portraits anymore. I rarely see paintings, (In acrylics, oils or watercolours), and pastels and coloured penicls and charcoal. There are sooo many amazing mediums to work with and they are few and far between. Digital art is great, I'm a digital artist myself. And I realized that though I still do some traditional art it never makes it to DA. I never take the time to just take a picture of it and upload it. We all started as Traditional Artists, every one of us. That was our beginning, our big break. Now we have forgotten about it. We are drawn to flashy images made on the computer. Sure its hard to do but honestly, traditional art is harder. Thats why we never do it anymore. At least, that's why I don't.

Do me a favor, and go out there and comment/fav/collect some traditional art. Keep the artists motivated. Just go and find five pieces of traditional art you like, any medium is acceptable, and comment on them. I lost a good, old friend recently who left DA because her tradtional art was being lost in the flood of digital artists and wolf artists.

So, find 5 pieces you like and post the links to them in a comment in my journal, include your own work even if you'd like. IT MUST BE TRADITIONAL though. (This includes Darkroom developed photography as well if you ask me). I will feature everything you post :)

Oh yes, and everyone who posts will get a free coloured headshot of one of their chars. Make sure you tell me who you want drawn in your post as well mates. I honestly don't care if we've ever met before either. If you just stumble across this journal, feel free to post. Even if you're in it for the free art I honestly don't care! Just... contribute some features :)

I LOVE traditional art. Goodness, so much. <3 I love digital, too, but traditional is kind of my comfort area. 83 Okay, here's some especially gorgeous traditional arts from people I know~

I used to do just traditional art. Makes me wish I could do it more. x3

I don't need a free headshot, though. x3 But I might just take you up on this 'find 5 traditional pieces' idea. c:
:iconninetails390:
Oh, I didn't even catch the free headshot bit. XD Silly me.

It'd be fantastic if you could doodle uhhhm... either Rivie or Torren. You can do either of them, your choice: [link] ...you can draw them as little kids like they are there, or you can draw them older. I just happen not to have any good pictures of Torren after he grows up. ^^;

I agree. I think writing is dying out just as fast, not that it was ever big in the first place.
But traditional art certainly holds a place for most artists that writing does not.
I prefer traditional, but I never post any of mine. Mostly because it's hard to get it on the computer with the same quality it has face to face.

I agree with you completely.
I love traditional art, my favorite artists are watercolor artists...buts it just hard to deny; that even in my own art- when I rarely do a digital piece... its much more...popular? I guess.

Anyways, I tried to pick some lesser popular pieces that are simply amazing;

There is magic in our art - no matter the form it takes. All you need to do... is create it.
:iconkamirawolfdemon:
I agree with you. There is something about seeing a good piece done traditionally. It kind of makes you think about how much hard work went into the creating of it and appreciate it so much more.

I have been doing more traditional lately myself I'm finding it easier and less of a hassle the digital

Picked a few from some friends who I think do excellent traditional art and threw a few of my own in as well.
